As a work from home mom, I am intimate friends with stress. Even before having kids, I have always worn my stress on my sleeve. But trying to juggle the needs of my family, household, and clients has taken my stress to a new level.
A recent study from University of Pennsylvania published in Social Science and Medicine has identified that going to work is actually LESS stressful than staying at home. Gee, how many years did it take them to figure THAT out? They need to do a study on work-from-home moms – that would be fascinating reading. I think their heads might explode with the amount of cortisone we generate.
The needs of a job outside the home actually create less stress than staying at home for a simple reason – there is an escape. I can’t help envying my husband as he trots off to work (at 6:30 am) and gets several blissful hours away from the constant needs of two adorable, but finicky human beings. The study notes that having children at home is actually less stressful than being at home without kids (who won THAT lottery?), but I am not completely buying it. I guess my adorable want-machines do have some redeeming qualities, but still.
All that being said, I know why staying at home is stressful. It is all of the daily annoyances that add up to a stressful life. The empty carton of milk in the fridge after your third trip to the store in a week, having to deal with the annoying PTA moms, being the one who has to deal with the repairmen, the toddler tantrum when you tried to go to one more store for things you actually need – it all adds up.
So as a personal challenge, I have decided to embark on a 31-day challenge to lower my stress level, and make staying at home not so overwhelming. Each day, I will focus on one area of my life that can be cleaned up or addressed to help make my life just a teensy bit easier – and less stressful.
It is going to be a process – change doesn’t happen overnight, and stress doesn’t disappear in 31 days, but there are always areas that I can address in life that can help me be less stressed and more focused.
Come on my journey with me, I challenge you to reduce the stress in your life. Get ready – your life will change starting tomorrow!
“This is a well-written ebook full of practical, practicable advice on reducing stress in your daily life. The 31 challenges are written from the author’s perspective of wife, mother, and work-from-home businesswoman, but all of these challenges can be tailored to suit most personal situations. Some are (seemingly) easy- Take a Walk, Phone a Friend. Some are harder- getting rid of the toxic people in your life, asking for help.
What I especially appreciated was the fact that several challenges led me to think about things that weren’t necessarily mentioned in the book: Day 12’s challenge, Plan Your Week on Sunday, made me realise that my family would benefit from a little 5-minute ‘family meeting’ on Sunday evening to give everyone a heads-up on the week ahead.
This short ebook packs a big punch and I recommend it to anyone who needs to simplify and slow down their lives.” – Suzanne via GoodReads
“I love that this book is in the form of a workbook – I found that trying to reduce my stress was a whole lot easier following along in a workbook format rather than just reading another self-help book. I also love that Jen shares her own personal successes and struggles with reducing stress in her day.” – Jessi Fearon – The Budget Mama via Amazon.
