Watch: How to get the most out of our existing masonry arch bridges

This video was first aired at NCE’s Future of Bridges conference.

Almost half of all bridge spans in the UK are of masonry construction.

However, inaccurate assessment has led to many bridges being needlessly demolished and replaced.

In this session, University of Sheffield director of the Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research (ICAIR) Centre Matthew Gilbert introduces the new enhanced guidance contained within CIRIA C800, which provides new advice and guidance on masonry arch structures.

Gilbert also offers his take on National Highways assessment of masonry arch structures, including the infilling of a bridge in Great Musgrave, Cumbria.
