Watch: Is ultra-low carbon reinforced concrete durable?

This video is from NCE’s 2023 UK Roads events.

National Composites Centre principal research engineer Kunal Kansara talks about the issues arising from the use of traditional steel-reinforced concrete and the benefits fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites offer, including tension strength/weight ratio, embodied carbon and corrosion.

Kansara also explores the possibility for the UK industry to eliminate the use of cement and steel within concrete roads through the use of alkali-activated Cementious Material (AACM) and basalt FRP rebars. He shares information on the low carbon reinforced concrete trial undertaken through National Highways designated funds by Skanska UK, Tarmac and Basalt Technologies on the M42 Junction 6 improvement scheme.
