Welcome to the Mom Owned Business Spotlight. In each installment, I will feature a new Mom Business Owner. I am so excited to show how different each business is as well as how everyone has different experiences and lessons that go along with entrepreneurship. As an entrepreneur that started my business when my daughter was born, I am passionate about business ownership, as well as honoring the mom experience while growing your business.
Today, I am sharing 10 Questions with Shontae Lucas-Hinnant of Sweet Nature Body.
Tell me a little about yourself. Who do you share your life with?
I live with my husband and two beautiful children in Virginia.
How did you get into business? Did it just happen one day? Did you have an exit strategy from your day job? Do you still have a day job? I love to hear how women got their start in business!
I was having the fight of my life! Battling anxiety, depression, and a whole slew of symptoms thanks to four scary letters, PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Symptoms range wildly from acne and hair loss to weight gain, infertility, and heart disease! Yup, it’s a total killjoy! I wanted more balance in my body and my life, so I dove into creating a product line that would be gentle enough for my skin and hopefully make me feel better in a natural, holistic way. Combining my aromatherapy expertise with my obsession for nature’s healing properties, Sweet Nature was born. I didn’t have an exit strategy . It was actually a health issue so I ended up leaving school and my full-time job as security. At the moment I do not have a day job.
What makes you excited to “go to work” each day? What helps you push through the long days?
Just helping people and learning makes me excited. Developing something that my children can witness and benefit so much from…makes it all worthwhile and keeps me pushing on.
What is the hardest thing about being a mom and being in business for you? What tradeoffs do you make when trying to balance both?
The hardest thing for me is celebrating progress and not perfection. As moms we want the best for our children and with our business being just like our newborn baby I find myself not trying to make so many mistakes , but in reality all mom no ,weather it’s with your children or in your business mistakes is how you achieve growth.
Tell me about your business! What do you do/make? Who are your ideal clients?
I develop natural truly balance skincare. For the modern woman who needs a natural Awakening, the Lovers of All Things spa & bath , for the woman that’s more in tune with the world craziness and is in need of a not so random pampering break.
Where can we find your business online? Please include your social media links as well!
Where do you work geographically? Do you work from home, have an office?
I have a home office in VA.
For someone considering starting their own business, what advice would you give them? How would you encourage them to start out?
I would say start with a open mind. Find your way not by comparing to others but by seeing what comes easy to you and appreciating its value.
What do your kids think about your business? Do they think what you do is awesome?
Totally! Every little thing about my business they love , the mass the making & the scents. I always have my tiny helping hands and dimple smiling faces.
Lastly, if you had to do it all over again, what change would you make, if any?
Good question, if I had to do it all over again I would build my strategies early on in business planning.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your story with me, Shontae. If you have questions for Shontae, please ask them in the comments below! Thanks again for tuning in to the Mom Owned Business Spotlight!
